The example below is the 24,150 / 24,250 / 24,350 Call Butterfly from the scanner above β read left to right.
The most you can make, only if NIFTY closes exactly at 24,250 (the middle strike) on expiry day.
Between these two prices, you're in profit. Outside this range, you start losing money.
The most you can lose β capped, no matter how far the price moves away in either direction. This is what makes it a "defined-risk" trade.
What you pay upfront to enter this trade. This is also your maximum possible loss.
Real steps β from picking your view to exiting the trade β not just how to use the scanner.
Butterflies work best when you expect the underlying to stay near a specific price by expiry β not trend strongly in either direction.
Choose NIFTY/BANKNIFTY/SENSEX etc., an expiry date, and the strike you expect price to land near β this becomes your middle strike.
Decide how far apart your lower and upper strikes are from the middle (e.g. Β±100 points), and pick a ratio β 1:2:1 is the most common.
Use the scanner to confirm what you'll pay to enter, your max profit/loss, and the margin your broker will block.
Buy 1 lot lower strike, Sell 2 lots middle strike, Buy 1 lot upper strike β same expiry, same option type (all calls or all puts). Most brokers let you place this as a single multi-leg order.
Track how close the underlying stays to your center strike. Set an alert at both breakeven points so you're notified if the trade starts moving against you.
You can close the position early if you've captured most of the profit or if price is running away from your range β or hold to expiry if price is still near the center strike.
A simple look at what happens on the backend every time you hit "Scan" β no jargon, just the real pipeline.
10+ years of NIFTY/BANKNIFTY intraday price, volume & option-chain history.
Removes bad ticks, gaps & holidays so the numbers stay accurate.
Splits the session into windows & every strike combo into a testable butterfly.
Calculates POP, risk/reward, IV & Greeks for every combination live.
Checks the setup against past data, out-of-sample, so results aren't over-fit.
You see the scanner table above, already sorted best-to-worst.
The scanner's probability score gets steadier as it's backed by more historical observations β this is why we run it against 10+ years of data instead of a few weeks.
Not one magic number β it's a weighted mix of real, checkable factors.
These are historical, statistical factors β not a guarantee of future profit. Always check current market conditions before placing a trade.
